What Attractants Work Best?
The attractant is the key to success.
Optiweigh data shows that a good attractant will weigh between 20 and 50 different animals per day - giving 50 to 100 animals contributing to the 5 day rolling average - thus making it a very accurate number (see article on numbers needing to be weighed
here).
Some of the things that we know work are:
- Dry licks;
- Molasses;
- Moalsses based blocks;
- Protein meals;
- Salt blocks; and
- Mineral salt.
Optiweigh Attractant
It is based on the recipe we have developed over the past few years and we know that using this product is the best way to get plenty of weight records from your Optiweigh unit.
It is a dry/loose lick formulation with no grain in it, and has the sweet smell and taste that are important for attracting both cattle and sheep. Being very tasty make sure you place the plastic 'limiter' on top of it in the tub.
Your local rural store may not know about it yet but get them to get in touch with the team at Agricon for price information and ordering, and see if you can get them to keep it on hand for you.
Limiters
For any dry licks or meals that are particularly tasty a limiter may be needed. These are now supplied with Optiweigh units and can be sent out if you don't have one. Make sure they are secured to the unit as the cattle will pick them up and take them away!
Liquid Roller
We can also supply a lick roller on request for use with molasses and other liquids.
